Why You Should Not Ignore Your Routine Dental Check-up

August 24, 2022

You are meticulous about your oral hygiene routine. Brushing your teeth twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, never miss it. You are flossing daily using up and down motion between all your teeth without fail. You make it a point to drink water after eating sweets when you can not brush your teeth immediately to help flush away any food particles. Your diet consists of various fresh, nutritious foods rich in vitamins and minerals to support your daily health. Since you are doing such a fantastic job with your home dental hygiene routine and diet, is it ok to ignore some of your routine dental appointments, especially since you have no signs or symptoms of any dental issues?

Putting off regular dental appointments when all seems well can seem like no big deal. As tempting as that may be, here are a few reasons you should not ignore your routine dental appointments.

Your routine dental appointments are far more than professional cleanings. These visits provide the dentist with regular opportunities to ensure that your teeth and gums are in perfect health. If they are not, the regular visit guarantees that anything that may need treatment is detected early when treatment is much less invasive and less expensive.

Here’s the thing, gum disease is sneaky. Initially, the signs of gingivitis are hidden at and below the gum line. Your dentist uses a specially designed tool around each tooth to check the depth of the pockets between the gum and the tooth to look for indications that gum disease may be present in the beginning stages. You probably recall your dentist calling out numbers to an assistant as they check around each tooth; these numbers are recorded and compared to the last readings to monitor for changes.

Gingivitis caught in the first stage is fully reversible with immediate treatment. If gingivitis is not treated quickly, it advances to the next stage of gum disease, periodontitis, and is no longer reversible. Treating periodontitis prevents additional damage before it leads to tooth, bone, and tissue loss. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss, and it is estimated that 50% of adults over 30 years old have advanced gum disease. That is a statistic you do not want to join.

How long does it take for gum disease to take hold and become a problem? Not long at all, gingivitis can go from nothing to a cause for concern in a matter of weeks. By the time you are experiencing the symptoms of gum disease like pale, swollen, puffy, receding or bleeding gums, gingivitis has been there for a while. Now it makes sense why the dentist is so adamant about regular dental appointments!

Tooth decay is also time-sensitive. With routine dental appointments, you get the benefit of an expert examining your teeth and gums thoroughly by adding x-rays. Dental imaging can show much more than would be visible with just a trained eye. Early demineralization, the beginning of a cavity, can be addressed before it becomes a hole that needs to be filled. Depending on your oral health and hygiene habits, your dentist will decide how frequently you require dental images. Most dentists now use digital x-rays, so there is no concern about radiation exposure as there was in the past.

Dentists can fix many problems, but they would much prefer to help you avoid the problems in the first place. A routine dental visit for prevention and early detection is not only better for your health, but it’s also better for your pocketbook. That’s a win-win scenario!

This office is wonderful- very clean facility with friendly and courteous staff. Dr. Zina Gotlieb is so nice and personable, and she spent more time counseling and answering questions than I have experienced at any other dental office. And she did not try to push any unnecessary treatments. I highly recommend this practice!
